Commuter Benefits

Flexible, tax-advantaged commuting made simple.

The Washington Hospitality Association, in partnership with Hospitality Health Insurance, offers a commuter benefits program that helps employees save money while reducing business costs.

Through a Commuter Reimbursement Account (CRA), employees can set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible commuting expenses like transit passes, parking, or ride-sharing.

Employers benefit from payroll tax savings and improved retention, while employees enjoy flexible, cost-effective options for getting to work.

It’s a win-win for you and your team.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Commuter Reimbursement Account (CRA)?

A CRA allows employees to set aside pre-tax income to pay for qualified commuting and parking expenses. Contributions can be adjusted at any time, giving employees the flexibility to match their monthly commuting needs.

Why should my business offer commuter benefits?
  • Cost savings: Contributions are pre-tax, so employers do not pay payroll taxes on CRA amounts.
  • Employee retention: Helping employees save on everyday commuting costs supports retention and recruitment.
  • Expert support: The Client Relationship Team is available to answer questions and provide ongoing assistance.
  • Compliance: If your business is located in Seattle and has at least 20 full-time employees, you are legally required to offer commuter benefits. Read more here.
What expenses are eligible for reimbursement?
  • Mass transit: Subway, bus, ferry, streetcar, light rail, train, vanpool fares, tokens, passes, or vouchers.
  • Parking: Parking on or near the workplace, or at a transit location used to commute by bus, train, or carpool.
  • Ride-sharing: uberPOOL and Lyft Line rides to and from work.
What expenses are not eligible?
  • Travel from work to business or client meetings.
  • Gas, mileage, or other costs for using a personal vehicle or taxi.
  • Highway, bridge, or tunnel tolls (e.g., EZ Pass).
Who is eligible to participate?

Employers decide if there are eligibility requirements (such as length of service). Employees who meet those criteria can enroll and adjust contributions whenever their commuting needs change.
